What AI-generated code actually changed about hiring engineers

AI isn’t coming for coding. It’s already doing a lot of it.

Satya Nadella said in April 2025 that 20–30% of the code in Microsoft’s repositories is now AI-generated, and Sundar Pichai gave a similar figure for Google in late 2024.

Sonar’s January 2026 survey put AI at 42% of all committed code, with 72% of developers who’ve tried the tools using them every day.

GitHub Copilot passed 20 million users in 2025, and 90% of the Fortune 100 use it.

At the sharp end, Y Combinator’s president said 25% of the Winter 2025 batch had codebases that were 95% AI-generated.

And yet Google says it plans to hire more engineers, with Pichai putting the real engineering-velocity gain at about 10%.

The job hasn’t disappeared.
